Romanian Cultural Heritage video
Report from the mobility in Romania
The aim of this LTT was to allow to work on the Sound and Narrative part in a movie, thus developing foreign language, oral discourse organisation and creativity skills. Students researched, revised and discussed the basics of text cohesion and coherence in English, expressive and persuasive literary techniques in short narratives, as well as technical principles of sound clarity and word discourse-pause/silent image/ soundtrack alternative in film making. The meeting was also an opportunity for mid-feedback on recordings made so far. Teams completed video portfolio with input on the cultural heritage of Romania, as revealed by its emblematic northern region, Bucovina: from the painted walls of medieval monasteries to local arts and crafts (woodwork, sewing and wax-painted eggs) and from the traditional horse culture to local cuisine.
Day 1 Opening ceremony. Presentation of Round–up of accomplished stages, feed-back and reports of coordinators. Presentation of Romanian history and local heritage at the local History Museum, followed by hands-on workshops at the Medieval Fortress and The Village Museum (folk dance, painting eggs, traditional braiding hair techniques). Local artists, historians and artisans provided expertise in all the activities.
Day 2 Visit to surrounding villages, with Unesco heritage sights. The trip was meant to open eyes to surviving rural traditions in the region, with the chance of observing elements of local architecture in the mountain area, as well as the unique features of medieval monasteries of Bucovina; Voronet, Sucevita, Moldovita. The natural setting also allowed students to reflect on ecological issues such as forest and habitat preservation in Europe while a visit to a local farm/B and B completed the activity with an illustration of how traditional animal rearing, cooking and lifestyle is eco-friendly and contributes to a reasonable use of natural resources. Students had also the opportunity to participate in workshops on pottery techniques, creating their owns cups or pots, experiencing a practical activity preserved in Marginea.
Day 3 Field trip to Lucina horse stud-farm, a hidden cultural jewel of the region, isolated in the North Eastern Carpathians. Besides observing the pristine mountainous landscape from the back of a horse/ a traditional cart drawn by horses, the visit was an opportunity to research into the culture of a long-forgotten ethnic group. Their lifestyle is closely interconnected with the only authentic Romanian horse breed and one of the oldest in Europe, directly linked to the wild horses of Asia – the Hutzul. The activity was part of very recent local efforts to bring this forgotten heritage into the spotlight again.
Day 4 Workshops on Sound and Narrative in a film, coordinated by the host school teachers of English and ITC in collaboration with visiting teachers. Students edited videos presenting the cultural heritage of Romania. All students and teachers worked in sessions in the computer labs on their final videos.
Day 5 Presentations of the final versions of the videos in the School Auditorium. Coordinating meeting and LTT evaluation. Farewell ceremony and certificates.
